FROM CONCEPT
TO COMMISSIONING

We are Espirall,

an Independent Creative Studio  & Technical Direction for complex water projects.

Applied R&D and AI-accelerated workflows for clients willing to innovate.

OUR PROCESS

1) Concept Design

Narrative-driven water experiences.

Every project begins with a question:

What should this place make people feel?

Concept design defines the experience before the system. We shape narrative and rhythm first — then translate them into water and special effects.

We consider:

  • Audience perception and memory.
  • Emotional progression — tension and release.
  • Visual composition — scale and light.
  • Water and FX as expressive tools.

We pursue the right solution for the narrative — not the most complex one.

Technical knowledge supports creativity, keeping ideas ambitious and buildable.

The result is not just a show.

It is a structured experience.

2) Technical Design

From concept to engineered documentation.

Technical design translates the narrative into a buildable system.

This phase demands precision and coordination.

We develop:

  • Hydraulic architecture and calculations.
  • 2D drawings and 3D models for integration.
  • Pumping and nozzle strategies aligned with performance.
  • Control philosophy with lighting and sound.
  • Safety and reliability criteria.

The objective is not complexity.

It is clarity.

Each concept becomes structured documentation validated before reaching site.

The result is a system engineered to perform as intended.

3) Technical Direction

Where design meets reality.

Technical direction ensures the project is executed as defined — not diluted during construction.

Concept, budget and constraints remain aligned throughout execution.

We stay actively involved on site to protect technical intent.

Our role includes:

  • Contractor coordination and supervision.
  • Commissioning, testing and optimisation.
  • Monitoring construction logic and constraints.

Presence on site is operational.

Every decision must serve the experience and remain sustainable within project parameters.

A project succeeds only if it performs consistently.

The concept must withstand reality.

4) Research & Development

Innovation, validated by reality.

We invest in applied R&D to expand what water experiences and special FX can achieve.

This is structured innovation — accelerated exploration and validation designed to reduce uncertainty before commitment.

AI is embedded in our workflow as a controlled instrument, supporting rapid ideation and scenario mapping under engineering supervision.

How we approach R&D

  • Concept exploration and feasibility framing
  • AI-supported iteration and testing
  • Risk mapping and performance validation
  • Integration into buildable systems

All outputs are reviewed through engineering criteria.

R&D is embedded in concept, design and commissioning.

DAVID LÓPEZ

ESPIRALL is directed by David López, a creative and technical director with over 25 years of experience in water architecture and engineered special effects.

His work sits at the intersection of concept development and engineered execution.

He combines narrative thinking with deep technical knowledge, ensuring that ambitious ideas remain buildable, operable and reliable.

David works selectively, typically engaging in a limited number of projects each year where his involvement can meaningfully influence both concept and outcome.
